About Plateau State > Markets in Jos Nigeria
Located in Bassa Local Government Area in the Northern part of Plateau State, Nigeria (Africa), the Jengre Market is currently rated commercially as one of the most important rural markets in Plateau State, second only to the popular Mangu Market located in the central part of Plateau State.
Jengre Market existed in a place called Jengre which used to be called Jiga. The exchange of goods and services was done in the market through the use of the batter system of trade in the pre-colonial days. This was later changed to the use of cowries and later British currency with the coming of the British colonialist.
The original name of Jiga was however changed to Jengre with the coming of white missionaries of the Seventh Day Adventist Church from America and the British colonialist who found it difficult to pronounce the local name of JIGA and ended up saying JENGRE every time they tried.
Regardless of its rural surroundings, the Jengre Market has a very long history of strategic importance to the economy of Plateau State and Nigeria at large especially during the pre-colonial and colonial days of Nigeria and even today.
During the colonial times, Jengre grew as a very important market place for the British Colonial masters mainly because of the rich deposit of columbite in surrounding villages which boosted mining activities on the Jos-Plateau since 1905. Another commodity worthy of note that helped to make the Jengre Market place grow even bigger is the large scale production of cotton by the local farmers during the colonial period in Nigeria. Mining activities for columbite has long been stopped in Jengre and today the surrounding mining site is called KALMBAI which is actually the way the locals pronounced the word COLUMBITE.
Jengre was so important to the colonial masters that they constructed a railway line to link it to Zaria town and then later to Jos to ease the transportation of cotton, ground nuts, columbite, etc to Lagos to be shipped to Europe. The old train that used the railway track was popularly called “DanZaria” by the locals, which means “the man from Zaria town”. These railway lines have been dismantled and replaced with a better road network today.
The Jengre Market located in Jengre town of Bassa Local Government Area is opened on Sundays only and is today known mainly for agricultural products like grains (soybeans, ground nuts, white maize, yellow maize, millet, sorghum, unprocessed rice, tamba grains, etc) tubers (yams, sweet potatoes, etc) livestock (cows, goats, sheep, etc) available in commercial quantities and all sourced from Jengre and other surrounding villages.
