About Plateau State > Articles

Nature has richly endowed Plateau State with scenic beauty. Mostly rocky and treeless, the state contains chains of hills and many interesting rock formations. The landscape ranges from bare rocks to man-made hillocks (resulting from tin maining) to deep gorges and volcanic table mountings such as those found around Kuru in Jos and the eastern part of Pankshin Local Government Area.

The plateau provides a hydrological head to many rivers in the Northern States notably River Kaduna whose source emerges between the villages of Assak and Katakayinye in Rukuba district of Bassa Local Government Area. Several of those rivers are fast flowing and have in the process developed into picture square waterfalls. Best known of these are Assop and Farin Ruwa falls both in the Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area and at the foot of the Ganawuri Hills. Assop falls is a spectacular holiday and picnic resort for most people, especially during the weekends. There is a well laid out park overlooking the falls for the relaxation of visitors.

Kurra Falls which lies to the east of Barkin-Ladi on the Jos - Pankshin road is another fascinating holyday resort. With its surrounding Artificial Lakes which are the product of tin mining activities in the area and the adjourning landscape, Kurra Falls looks more or less like a "Nigerian Switzerland". The Kurra Falls is used by the Nigerian Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) for generating electricity. Electricity Supply from Kurra has been most reliable since its inception.
